The Inspiration of Robin Roberts

On Wednesday, February 20, 2013, ABC’s Good Morning America was complete again, as co-anchor Robin Roberts returned to the news desk after undergoing a bone marrow transplant to treat the rare blood disorder, myelodysplastic syndrome, also known as MDS. Roberts has been in recovery from the transplant for five months. At the top of the morning broadcast, Roberts said, “I have been waiting 174 days to say this: ‘Good Morning America!'”

Faith, family and friends is what Roberts said helped her through this process.  It was a day of celebration filled with surprises, performances, and the love of her ABC network family, and sisters Dorothy and Sally-Ann. Roberts’ sister Sally-Ann was a perfect match for the stem cells donation to aide in Roberts’ recovery.

A vision of strength, Roberts seemed thrilled to be back and everyone, including viewers, were excited for her return.  Throughout this process she has shown so much courage and has inspired many with her story.  One of her favorite quotes is “make your mess a message,” and she has demonstrated that.  She’s partnered with the Be The Match Foundation, which is the world’s largest listing of potential marrow donors, to help more patients in need of a transplant.  As a result, thousands have signed up with the Foundation to be donors.

“Light. Love. Power. Presence.” Those are the words imprinted on the Be The Match wristband in support of Roberts’ recovery.  It’s the “The Prayer of Protection,” by James Dillet Freeman, which in its entirety reads: “The Light of God surrounds me. The Love of God enfolds me. The Power of God protects me. The Presence of God watches over me. Wherever I am, God is.”  Roberts recites this daily prayer, and it’s also what has connected her even more with viewers.

Contemporary Christian artist Mandisa performed her top selling single “Stronger,” which Roberts stated she listened to regularly. The lyrics of the song were quite apposite, especially the chorus: “When the waves are taking you under, Hold on just a little bit longer, He knows that this is gonna make you stronger, stronger, The pain ain’t gonna last forever, And things can only get better, Believe me, This is gonna make you stronger.” Roberts indeed looked stronger and on the road to a complete recovery.

There are occurrences in life that we can never quite be prepared for.  During those times are when we lean on our faith the most. Often times we cry, “Why me?” Well, why not you? Our lives are filled with circumstances and situations that are really testimonies to help someone else. Watching Roberts inspired me greatly. If she can return to work after five months of undergoing major surgery, I can get up off of my healthy tail and make the best of my situation. Roberts’ message to us is this; no matter what you are currently experiencing, you have a power that is greater than you to help you make it through, and He will use your experience to inspire others. Robin Roberts is a survivor! She survived breast cancer and she is surviving MDS!

Welcome Back Robin!
