REVIEW: Gary Mayes & Nu Era–“Go Tell It”

Gary Mayes & N.E.-Go Tell It coverThe joy of great Christmas music is its timeless nature. Such can be said for one of the best Christmas albums you may never have heard. For this, we head to Houston, TX for Gary Mayes & Nu Era. In 2004, they released their sophomore project, which happened to be an incredible Christmas effort titled Go Tell It-The N.E.X-Perience Vol. 2. It’s rare that an artist would release a Christmas project as a follow up project, but this one aptly qualifies.

Thirteen tracks strong, this project stands the test of time as one of the most creative and appealing holiday efforts in the marketplace. Mayes, a gifted and skilled songwriter, vocalist, and drummer, ensures that this project is filled with an undeniable groove. Such is the case with the original and infectious “All Hail To The King”, featuring Shawn McClemore on lead vocals along with the R&B infused “Happy U Were Born”.

Mayes and N.E. have consistently produced and worked with some of the industry’s best vocalists. A decade before signing with Motown Gospel, Mayes enlisted the skilled Gene Moore Jr. Moore’s incredible vocals are showcased on tracks like “Jesus My Everything”. Moore teams with K. Small and Ced B. on easily one of the top five covers of the popular holiday hit “This Christmas”, made famous by the legendary Donny Hathaway.

This project is perhaps most known for producing the powerful guts “Don’t 4 Get The Baby” and “Go Tell It”. “Don’t 4 Get The Baby” features the powerful and piercing vocals of Nakitta Clegg Foxx, whose incredibly convincing delivery makes this one a year-round favorite and could easily cause several strong moments of worship. Equally memorable is the album’s title track, which features the incomparable Kim Burrell. Between Burrell’s vocal acrobatics and Mayes’ drum features, this up tempo track is guaranteed to scratch every music lover’s itch.

The project also features remixes of “We Worship Thee” and “My Love 4 U”, two popular and powerful singles from Mayes’ debut project The N.E.X-Perience, Vol. 1.  These remixes are simply incredible.

From start to finish, the musicality and creativity of Go Tell It-The N.E.X-Perience Vol. 2 is too big to solely be digested during the Christmas season. Even ten years later, this project remains one for the ages and a Christmas favorite that you need in your arsenal.
