REVIEW: Doobie Powell–“My Gift”

Doobie Powell My GiftOne of independent music’s best kept musical secrets is Doobie Powell. While mainstream music lovers may not fully be familiar, music purists are very familiar with the Powell name in the realm of urban music. Powell has worked with everyone from Kim Burrell and The Clark Sisters to John P. Kee and B. Slade. In 2013, he was featured in the motion picture Black Nativity which starred Angela Bassett, Jacob Latimore, and Forest Whitaker, helping to produce that project’s soundtrack alongside Raphael Saadiq. So the concept of a Doobie Powell Christmas release is a musical dream come true and it doesn’t disappoint.

Released in 2013, this project puts Christmas music through the creative colander of Doobie Powell. In short, Christmas has NEVER sounded so good! While the project is only seven tracks, every second provides and unpredictable musical look at the world’s most famous holiday.

This project is a great mixture of Christmas covers and original music that can really be played all year. The original track “Jesus (The Gift)” features the hip-hop flow of AJ Baymon aka Soft Spoken Prophet, and Powell’s brother “Church Boy” Billy Powell with the skilled C. Williams singing the hook. This mid-tempo groove is incredibly infectious and will appeal to urban music lovers. The original music continues as The Williams Singers join Powell on the quartet infused “He Did It For Me”. It’s rare to hear a quartet number in the realm of Christmas music but this works incredibly!!

Equally impressive are the Christmas covers on this project, which will absolutely impact your ears and your spirit. Classics like “White Christmas” and “Silent Night” are smooth, urban, and unpredictable. It’s rare that classics can be effectively covered, but Powell does so intelligently and respectfully, while adding his unique flair. The popular song “Carol Of The Bells” gets an incredible makeover that you have to hear to believe. Couple it with the vocals of Denise Powell and hip hop stylings of Weezer Rascal and you have a modern classic.

My Gift is indeed a musical gift to the world that keeps on giving. This project has everything that will make you spin this one all throughout the year. Our only request is this. Can we make this project longer?! Thankfully, there’s the repeat button!
