REVIEW: Coriology–‘Twas The Night

Coriology Christmas coverOne of the most intriguing elements of a Christmas project is to see just how creative an artist will be with their presentation of holiday music. With that in mind, we go to Atlanta for one of independent music’s up and coming artists whose sound blends the best in R&B and soul. Welcome Coriology with his inaugural Christmas effort titled ‘Twas The Night. This project is the follow up to his 2013 debut project titled Coriology 101.

Twas The Night is a 10-track effort that puts the Christmas holiday through the feel good musical colander of Coriology. A glance at the album’s cover art accurately indicates that this project is both fun and exciting and indeed doesn’t disappoint.

Hardly any Christmas carol on this project is traditional in its presentation. Instead, the interpretation of each song is original and creative while still respecting the premise of each single. The project kicks off with “Wish U”, which serves as a take on “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”. An absolutely fun song, the musicality on this single will bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart, all while making your ears VERY happy!

“Drummer Boy” employs a reggae vibe and features Malachi Rivers, who adds his hip-hop flair to the mix.

The interludes are incredibly fun and creative. Coriology gives you a small taste of what can be done with “Gloria” on the appositely named “Instagram Post”. Can you guess how long that track it?! Equally relevant is the track “Facebook Post”, where he answers a request to perform his rendition of “This Christmas”.

The only Christmas carol without a specific twist is “The Chrismas Song”. Made famous by Nat King Cole, Coriology’s laid back yet jazzy approach to this track makes this one of the best versions of this classic on the market today.

“Amazing” is an original piece that isn’t an adaptation of a known Christmas carol. Instead, it’s a well placed and authentic worship song that is solely focused on the incredible person of Christ. This one can easily find itself in a church near you on any given Sunday.

Perhaps the highlight of the album is “Favorite Things”. He teams with Maiesha McQueen and Ryan Whitehead for this presentation of the classic from The Sound of Music. This single deserves several spins as it’s mellow yet funky vibe is accented by amazing and well placed vocals. However, look out for the end where he infuses several of his favorite Christmas songs in a way that will make you shake your head, and throw the nearest sharp object…so be careful listening to this one!!

From start to finish, Coriology has presented a very fresh and welcoming approach to holiday music that can be digested all throughout the year. Be sure to add ‘Twas The Night to your collection.
